About The School
The Mt Waverley School of Ballet was established in 1991 by Principal Lynette Lee (former dancer with the Victorian Ballet), offering classical ballet. Lynette teaching career spans over 40 years, both with her own school and schools such as the Christine Walsh Dance Centre. Lynette has trained many students who have gone on to have sucessful careers with the Australian Ballet Company and other companys both in Australia and overseas.
Today the classes still operate from the St Marks Hall in Chadstone and offer a variety of styles of dance for students to participate in. Classical ballet classes are conducted in the Australian Institute of Classical Dance's (AICD) Borovansky Syllabus for students from Play Ballet levels througn to Solo Seal

OPEN DAYS
The school conducts open days at the end of each term, which allows parents, family and freinds the opportunity to view the students in the class environment, and gives the students an opportuntiy to demonstrate to their family and friends the work which they have been learning through the term and their progress.
ANNUAL PERFORMANCE
The Annual Performance will be held in 4th term. Students will learn a number of routines which will form part of the ballet which has been selected for the year. All students are invited to participate in the performance, giving family and friends a chance to watch our talented students in action.
EXAMINATIONS
Each year the students are able to participate in examinations held during 3rd term. Classes & examinations are fully graded using the Australian Institute of Classical Dance’s Borovansky method of ballet, from Pre-Primary through to Solo Seal. This training and examination program emphasizes correct placement, dynamics and performing qualities inherent in the Russian method.
To do examinations students must attend 2 classes of classical dance per week from Grade 1 onwards. It is strongly recommended to attend 3 classes per week when studying senior levels. Solo Seal 5 classes per week.
FRENCH LANGUAGE LESSONS
The Mt Waverley School of Ballet also offers French lessons, given by our French-Australian teacher Anne-Aelis. French lessons are run to help students with understanding the terminology which they use in their dance classes.
PLAY BALLET CLASSES
Play Ballet is taught for the under 5 year olds, (children still attending Pre-School) and is not an examination class but an introduction to classical ballet based on natural movement, the enjoyment of music and dance encouraging self expression and confidence.
Play Ballet classes involve a mixture of basic technique excercises to devlop the foundations for classical dance as well as a range of free expression dancing utlising props and costumes, where children use their imagination by creating their own dances and develop their motor skills by practicing the movements they have learned in their excercises.

Dance Styles Offered At The School
Classical Ballet: A traditional, formal style of ballet that adheres to classical ballet technique. It is known for its aesthetics and rigorous technique (such as pointe work, turn-out of the legs, and high extensions), its graceful, flowing, and precise movements, and its ethereal qualities.
Pointe technique: is the part of classical ballet technique that concerns pointe work, in which a ballet dancer supports all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet. A dancer is said to be en pointe when the dancer's body is supported in this manner.
Character & National Dance: is the stylized representation of a traditional folk or national dance, and uses movements and music which have been adapted for the theater. Character dance is integral to much of the classical ballet repertoire with adaptations of Hungary, Russia, Poland, Italy & Spainish dances being the csárdás, mazurka, tarantella & flamenco. Other national dances such as the Polynesian Hula are studied and performed in the traditional manner.
Middle Eastern & Belly Dance: is an epressive form of dance which emphasises complex movements of the torso. Originally performed as a Middle Eastern fold dance, belly dance has evolved to take many different forms depending on the country and region, both in costumes and dance styles.
